Kalamansi (Citrofortunella microcarpa) Peel Extract as a Natural Larvicide Against Aedes aegypti
Dengue remains a public health concern in Tanza, where Aedes aegypti breeds in household water containers. This study determined the larvicidal activity of kalamansi (Citrofortunella microcarpa) peel extract against third-instar Aedes aegypti larvae. Using a completely randomized design, larvae were exposed to extract concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% alongside a commercial temephos control and a distilled-water negative control, with three replicates each. Mortality was recorded at 24 and 48 hours. The 15% concentration produced a mean mortality of 86.7% at 48 hours, which did not differ significantly from the positive control (p = 0.21), and one-way ANOVA showed significant differences among concentrations (F = 42.8, p < 0.001). The findings suggest that kalamansi peel, a common kitchen waste, is a promising low-cost larvicide; field trials and tests on non-target organisms are recommended.
